Two doctors looking over important documentsHealth Insurance Portability & Privacy Act

Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPAA) is meant to improve privacy for people receiving healthcare. The federal HIPAA legislation, which has been years in the making, centers on patient rights by assuring the privacy of personal health information. The provisions also give patients more control over who sees their private medical information.

As a result of the new law, when patients come to the hospitals or any of the other health system entities, they will be given a Joint Notice of Privacy Practices describing how the facility will use their health information internally and under what circumstances their information will be shared with third parties.

The law does not interfere with the care and treatment of patients, but it does regulate how hospitals can share personal health information with government agencies and third parties.

Kishwaukee Health System has always had privacy policies in place in accordance with state law and good medical practice.
